SAN AUGUSTINE - English - Espanol
It was in 1596 that Spanish Governor Gonzalo Méndez drew the urban layout of the colonial city. He did it, naturally, according to the Spanish tradition: a main in the middle of the city bordered by the house of the governor on a side and the church on the other When the English conquered the city in 1763, they gave Havana on the island of Cuba in exchange to the Spanish. Many Spanish of Florida emigrated, once more, towards Havana. But, on the another side, the English seized Gibraltar and the Island of Minorca, pushing the minorcans towards Florida to populate their new colony. Still today, the majority of the colonial houses, which remain, are those of emigrants of Minorque with names like Solano, Pellicer, Manucy... and these families continue to take part in the tradition and the culture of Saint Augustine. Toward the end of the 19th Century, tycoon Henry Flagler arrived to Saint Augustine, one of the co-founders of Standard Oil and a close friend of John D. Rockerfeller. Thus began "the Flagler era". He built various and luxurious resorts, whose Hotel Ponce de Leon is now home to Flagler Collège. He built several railroads to make possible for the Northern upper-class to come to benefit from a winter haven. Saint Augustine is a city very pleasant to visit. It is necessary to walk in all of its streets randomly. The only drawback is parking one’s car, although there are several parkings in the center. We were there during the week and despite everything it was necessary for us to turn around during half an hour before finding a spot for our car. Indulge into your hunting of antiques stores, art galery, quaint boutiques throughout Saint Augustine. And good dishes ! I remember a dish of fried scampi shrimp with coconuts ...and coleshaw, not bad at all ! Super if you like coleshaw of course. Right before plunging the shrimps into the boiling oil, you plunge them into your small grated coconut heap and all is fried together. Very simple. Today Governor’s house is a museum, look at the horses in the boats / En Tesoros : libros, viejos manuscritos, viejas monedas / treasures: old books, old handwritten, old coins Del otro lado de la calle / Across the Governor’s house Flagler collège / El collegio Flagler In the bottom the two Flagler college’s towers / En el fundo la dos torres del collegio Flagler Vieja casa con paredes hechas de coquina como en el fort y la màs antigua escuela de todo Florida Old house with wall in coquina like in the fortress and the oldest school of all Florida En 1596 el gobernador espanol Gonzalo méndez creo el plan urbano para la ciudad colonial. And today, I will finish with the slideshow See you soon. Josée
